Home adaptations 'could benefit elderly' March 11, 2010

Improvements to the homes of elderly Brits would make a big difference to their comfort and keep them in their own house for longer.

That is the opinion of a spokeswoman for Foundations - the national body for home improvement agencies in England - who recently stated that adapting properties is extremely beneficial for older people.

It was recently revealed by the organisation that the UK's ageing society will inevitably lead to the number of elderly Brits having to live at home.

For that reason, it explained, they need to be altered and made more suitable for their needs.

The body's representative commented: "Many will not want to go into a care home, preferring instead to continue living independently in their own homes. Adaptations can make this possible for many older people, giving them a choice."

She added that such upgrades could include installing level-access showers, fitting grab rails, providing a stairlift or adding ground-floor bathrooms.
