Rural housing shortage 'must be fought' March 5, 2010

More needs to be done to ensure people have access to housing in the British rural regions, the English Rural Housing Association has said.

It was recently revealed by the Commission for Rural Communities that the long-term future of the countryside is in danger as a result young people having to leave in order to find homes and jobs.

And Martin Collett, operations director for the English Rural Housing Association, commented that this is down to high house prices in such areas leading to young people being forced out of the market.

Because of this, he explained, employers find it increasingly difficult to employ workers and the local economy suffers.

Mr Collett went on to suggest local councils and authorities "get involved in tackling this issue by working with housing associations such as ourselves, to research and develop projects that are designed to help people from the villages with a connection to the village".
