Post-cold snap property advice March 8, 2010

Homeowners have been given tips on how to deal with damage caused to their house by the recent cold weather.

Writing for telegraph.co.uk, property expert Jeff Howell - who wrote the book the Rising Damp Myth and has 15 years' experience of the construction industry - explained that heavy frost can have a big effect on homes.

He stated people could find issues with their guttering as a result of freezing temperatures and snow, which can lead to leaks.

To fix any problems seen during the cold weather - such as shrinking plastic gutters and downpipes - Mr Howell advised checking each joint and pushing those that are displaced back together.

"There are marks on gutter union brackets showing where the two adjoining sections should rest - allowing for expansion or contraction movement in either direction," he said.

Furthermore, he stated that it is important to ensure the downpipes are blockage-free.
