2009 record-breaking year for Costain March 10, 2010

International engineering and construction firm Costain bucked the trend by registering record-breaking annual revenue for the 12 months to December 31st 2009.

As announced in the group's preliminary results for last year, turnover grew to £1.1 billion from £996 million in 2008 - exceeding £1 billion for the first time in 16 years.

Furthermore, the company revealed that its profit from operations saw a 14 per cent boost up to £20.8 million, while its order book stood at £2.6 billion.

Its profit before tax was £18.1 million.

Commenting on the figures, chairman David Allvey said: "This was an excellent overall operational performance. Once again, the group has demonstrated its resilience in a difficult economic environment."

He added: "Costain is looking to the future with confidence."

The firm was established in its original form in 1865 by Richard Costain, a builder from the Isle of Man.

It was floated as a public company in 1933.
